Legislator Compensation*
A Legislator’s salary is fixed by the Constitution at $10 per day, plus expenses in an amount fixed by the Legislature. Expenses are set as follows:
- A travel allowance of $.10 per mile from the member's home to the Capitol and return each day the Legislature is in session.
- $50.00 per diem for three days each week during regular session, special session or organizational session
- $4,108.00 per month (year round)
- Members of interim legislative committees, subcommittees, and standing Committees receive additional compensation. Click here for more information.
Discretionary Spending**
Section 41-24, Code of Alabama, 1975, authorizes the appropriation of discretionary funds to State Legislators. These discretionary funds are also known as “Community Service Grants“ and may be granted to any qualified community agencies, institutions, organizations and projects within the State of Alabama.”
Statements of Economic Interests***
Section 36-25-15(a), Code of Alabama, 1975, provides that “candidates at every level of government” must file a Statement of Economic Interests with the State Ethics Commission no later than April 30 of each year covering the period of the preceding calendar year.
The statements disclose information such as employer, name of spouse, spouse employer, firms in which he/she has ownership (vested) interests, sources of other income, debt, real estate holdings, and professional/consulting activities.
